🧅 The Perennial Onion That Walks!
Egyptian Walking Onions are a hardy, perennial onion variety that truly lives up to its name. Rather than forming traditional flower seeds, these onions grow clusters of tiny bulbs (called “bulbils”) at the top of their stalks. As the bulbils mature, the heavy stalk bends down to the ground, allowing the plant to “walk” by replanting itself naturally—hence the name!
We grow these unique onions right here on our farm, and because they’re perennial, they return year after year, making them a sustainable and low-maintenance choice for both home gardeners and food lovers. 🌱
🌿 Why Egyptian Walking Onions Are a Great Choice
These onions aren’t just fun to watch—they’re incredibly useful in the kitchen and packed with benefits:
- 🧄 Edible from top to bottom – Use the green stalks like scallions, the underground bulbs like regular onions, and the top bulbils as a garlicky, crunchy treat
- 🌿 Strong, savory flavor – Often a bit more potent than store-bought onions, with a touch of garlic taste
- 🔁 Perennial and self-multiplying – Once planted, they’ll spread naturally and can produce year after year with little effort
- 🛡️ Cold-hardy and resilient – Perfect for Canadian climates, they survive through winter and are often the first green shoots to appear in spring
- 🍽️ Rich in nutrients – Like all alliums, they contain antioxidants and compounds like allicin, which support heart health and immune function
🍳 How to Use Egyptian Walking Onions in the Kitchen
You can use different parts of the plant at various times of the year:
- 🌱 Spring stalks (green onions): Chop fresh into salads, stir-fries, eggs, or soup
- 🧅 Summer bulbs (underground onions): Use in any dish that calls for regular onions
- 🧄 Top bulbils (tiny aerial bulbs): Roast, pickle, or use as a spicy garnish
They’re especially great in omelets, sautés, herb butters, and homemade broths.
